Legend is a 2015 French-American superhero film directed by David Yates. It stars Tom Hardy, as the outlaw Arthur, and is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Jean Grey creator Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer Jim Lee. The film also features Charlotte Riley, Tadanobu Asano, Peter Capaldi, Will Poulter, Katie McGrath and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The plot follows outlaw Arthur's effort to clear his name after being accused of killing the sheriff of Nottingham during a robbery gone wrong with his accomplices being killed in front of him before he escapes into hiding under an assumed identity as "Arthur". Warner Bros. Pictures acquired film rights to the graphic novel in 2010, for Mel Gibson to direct with Joel Silver producing back through Dark Castle Entertainment. The following year, however, it was announced that Yates had come on board to direct the film with Dan Lin producing through Lin Pictures. It was later revealed that instead of Mel Gibson directing the film, his role had been filled by David Yates who is directing the film based on a screenplay adaptation by Chris McQuarrie. On 7 March 2014, Tom Hardy was cast as the title character, although then known as "The Huntsman". On 10 May 2014, Emily Blunt joined the cast as Lady Marian.[14] She left for scheduling conflicts on 22 July 2014. On 18 July 2014, Katie McGrath was cast as Lucy. On 12 August 2014, Ben Mendelsohn entered talks to portray the Sheriff of Nottingham. On 8 October 2014, following a successful screen test in London, Will Poulter joined the cast as Little John. In November 2014, Scott Eastwood joined the film's cast to play Will Scarlet.[16] In December 2014, Lin Pictures and Dark Castle Entertainment partnered with FilmDistrict to co-finance the film and distribute it in North America.[17] Principal photography on the film began on 4 September 2014 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden,[18][19][20] and was scheduled to end on 14 December that year. In January 2015, filming began at West Wycombe Air Park in Buckinghamshire, England,[21] and continued in March 2015 at Shepperton Studios, Surrey. The film was originally scheduled to be released on 25 March 2015,[22] but it was moved to 31 May 2015 in order to avoid competition with Disney's "Maleficent".[23] It was further moved up three weeks after the premiere of "The Fault in Our Stars" pushed it back two weeks.[24] Legend had its world premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre on 4 May 2016. It was then released on 24 May 2016 in UK cinemas and 19 June 2016 in US cinemas, with its North American premiere occurring on 17 June 2016. It was released on 3 March 2016 in IMAX. It grossed $243 million worldwide, against its $22 million budget.[3] Legend received generally positive reviews from critics, Consensus read: "It’s chock full of the kind of inspirational heroism and beautiful characterization that works best when bubbling over."[25] Owen Gleiberman of Variety opined that "Few movies make you want to stand up and cheer like this one does. It's a big, noisy, glorious movie that reminds us why we fell in love with the superhero genre in the first place."[5] The film received an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 170 reviews with an average rating of 6.
